In a document entirely in the hand of our first president, George Washington pays for food supplies for Mount Vernon. Dated March 23, 1788, payment is made to John F. Mercer for wheat and corn to provide for Washington's plantation, which had been disrupted by his service during the Revolutionary War. Mercer was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, a United States Congressman from Maryland (1792-1794), and Maryland's Governor (1801-1803). At the bottom of the document, below the mat, is an inscription from John Mercer's grandson Richard Mercer datelined Cedar Park, West River, MD on January 14, 1858, to John H. B. Latrobe (1803-1891), son of the designer of the U.S. Capitol building.
The document is framed on acid free backing with museum glass in a modern frame. Sight size is 8 1/4" x 3 3/8".
Price: $19,000
